Day 1
This morning you will be collected from your hotel in Calafate and transferred to the bus station to join a public bus for the 7-8 hour drive south across the pampas following the Andes. Change buses at the border. There may be a three hour wait at the Chilean border until the next transfer to Paine National Park is available. Depending on which day you commence, you may travel via the Cerro Castillo border or via Puerto Natales to the Paine National Park (this is dependent on bus schedules). Both options offer panoramic scenery with great rolling hills dotted with stunted beech trees and the occasional herd of guanaco and sometimes rhea. You may even spot the odd Condor gliding high above the Patagonian pampas. Accommodation at Las Torres Inn.
Day 2
When we first see the great granite pinnacles of Torres del Paine it is worth remembering that the Andes is the youngest chain of mountains in the world. One can imagine the great pressures and movements of the earth that created these spectacular vertical peaks. The trekking starts on the slopes of the Almirante Nieto Mountain that borders the River Ascensio. We make a pronounced ascent to arrive at the River Ascensio Valley and then a further two hour climb to reach the Chilean refuge. We continue our walk crossing the forest of coihues, a Chilean evergreen used for thatching, with the objective of reaching the base of Las Torres. This is popular point for the mountaineers to begin their climbing, with vertical faces of more than 880 metres. Later we arrive at the Las Torres viewpoint, a natural amphitheatre with magnificent views that is situated at the base of the vertical granite towers that are more than 2,700 metres high. Here we can see la Torre Sur, Central y Norte, el Nido de C ndores and the North face of the Almirante Nieto Mountain. Also we can see la Morena, a rocky formation, that has an altitude of 1,000 metres. Finally we return by the same path. Duration: 7-8 hours round trip. Accommodation at Las Torres Inn.
Day 3
This is a Regular excursion, so you may join a group coming from Puerto Natales. This excursion combine a drive all along the road that gs from Porter a Laguna Amarga to Villa Serrano with several hikes such as the Sendero de la Fauna, ideal to appreciate the local fauna, and Salto Grande, among other trails. You will be drop at the end of the tour at Tyndall. Duration: 7-8 hours. Accommodation at Tyndall.
Day 4
Transfer to Pudeto Pier. Here you will get on board of the "Hielos Patag nicos" Ferry and cross the Peh Lake. After a 30 minute navigation you will start the trek towards the French Valley, which is surrounded by lakes, rivers and streams, and has a wonderful view of the Paine massif. Accommodation at Tyndall.
Day 5
We begin today with a transfer to Serrano pier to embark on a zodiac along the Rio Serrano, leaving behind the glacial blue lakes and perhaps passing herds of guanaco and rhea as the towering peaks recede. On reaching the Esperanza Fiord, we join a larger boat to view Balmaceda glacier, and perhaps spot seals and the abundant bird life for which this area is renown. Our stop tonight is at the fishing village of Puerto Natales situated on the Ultima Esperanza Fiord. Accommodation Weskar Lodge, Puerto Natales.
Day 6
After an early breakfast we depart to the bus station for the 5-6 bus trip back across the border and onto the great Patagonian Pampa which we cross on our way to Calafate. Our trip concludes on arrival in Calafate bus terminal. NB: From Puerto Natales it is possible to take the Chilean Fjords extension north to Puerto Montt
