Welcome to Norway’s scenic capital, Oslo! Surrounded by forest and situated on the edge of the Oslofjord, Oslo is full of world-class galleries and museums, and has a vibrant cafe culture. Meet your fellow travellers and Tour Director this evening for a welcome drink.
Our morning sightseeing tour takes us to the Fram Museum, Vigeland’s Park, Karl Johans gate, and Holmenkollen Ski Jump with spectacular views of the Oslofjord. Tonight we’ll enjoy a group welcome dinner at a local restaurant. [B,D]
After breakfast, we board our flight to Longyearbyen. [B,D]
Special Experience: The largest settlement in incredible Spitsbergen, it is also the world’s northernmost city and this afternoon we’ll visit the world’s northernmost brewery.
Embark Cruise: Today we board a One Ocean Expedition ship for a 9-night discovery of the amazing Svalbard archipelago to encounter its stunning wildlife, landscapes and scenery. Enjoy a welcome dinner on board this evening as we set sail into Isfjorden. [B,D]
As we travel through the Sound near Bourbonhamna, keep an eye out for the smiling Beluga whales that are known to frequent these waters. On a shore excursion, we’ll visit an old hunting cabin and hopefully glimpse some of the many reindeer that inhabit this area. [B,L,D]
We cruise into Krossfjorden and take a zodiac along the cliffs of the incredible Lilliehook Glacier - at a height of 80 metres and with a face almost 7 kilometres wide, you’ll definitely appreciate its scale. We’ll get a closer look at the numerous bird colonies that call the area home. Bearded and ringed seals are also often seen in this fjord. [B,L,D]
Today we visit the spectacular Monaco Glacier. The nearby coastal plain near the mouth of Liefdefjorden is also a great place to spot polar bears that come here to hunt for seals or feed on birds’ eggs. [B,L,D]
We reach the northernmost point of the archipelago today. At 81 degrees north, Phippsoya is just 540 nautical miles from the North Pole! This area is also another great place for polar bear viewing. [B,L,D]
We turn south into the main strait separating Svalbard’s two main islands - Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet, wonderful for viewing a huge array of Arctic wildlife and breathtaking scenery. [B,L,D]
In Hinlopen Strait, the cliffs at Alkefjellet are home to more than a hundred thousand breeding Brunnich’s guillemots, as well as thousands of kittiwakes and black guillemots. Nearby Murchison Fjord is a wonderful place to kayak or cruise as we navigate the waterways between the islands. [B,L,D]
Today we’ll witness the thousands of birds nesting on the island of Fuglesangen and a large colony of dovekies - tiny seabirds, native to this region, with distinctive black and white colouring. We’ll also visit the old whaling station of Smeerenburg. [B,L,D]
The sight and sound of a walrus hauling out of the sea spells 'Arctic’ like nothing else can. We’ll visit a well-known walrus colony and hopefully see these animals ashore. Approaching from downwind can often confirm that walrus are ashore, as the smell of a walrus haulout is quite 'unique’! Tonight we celebrate our journey with a dinner attended by the ship’s captain. It’s a great time to reflect on our amazing voyage. [B,L,D]
Disembark Cruise: After breakfast we bid farewell to our fellow passengers and Arctic expedition ship. The day is at leisure for you to explore this fascinating town further.
