Day 1: Los Angeles, California to San Diego
Know much about San Diego besides Ron Burgundy? Nope? That's okay. With a coastline position that's close enough to high-five Mexico, it's all about how many fish tacos you can consume in the next 48 hours anyway. Get acquainted on our city tour with beaches, San Diego Harbor and Downtown, oh my! Surfers froth over San Diego for its variety of breaks within (almost) paddling distance. Look out for pros like Rob Machado in the line-up. Total beginner? Try La Jolla Shores. Tonight, hit up Gaslamp Quarter or seek out rooftop bars for cocktails with a view. Meals: -Dinner Included today: -San Diego city tour Optional activities: -Nightclub crawl
Day 2: San Diego
We suggest you keep today classy with a ride on a historic trolley, a jaunt through the Spanish-style Balboa Park and a visit to San Diego Zoo (one word: pandas). Hone your craft beer vocab with a self-guided tour through over 80 breweries and brewpubs in "America's Craft Beer Capital". Or just get in on the sun and surf action along the 70 miles (112km) of beaches. Meals: -Breakfast Optional activities: -Water sports -Baseball game (seasonal)
Day 3: San Diego to Prescott, Arizona
Joshua trees are like a mutant cactus-cross-pandanus and you'll only spot them in Southwest USA. Drive through the tree-dotted landscape of the Mojave desert to Prescott (home of the world's oldest rodeo), where cowboy hats are part of the locals' uniform and Whiskey Row is the place to be. Soak up some of the lingering history from the notorious strip of gun-slinging saloons that once stood there. Meals: -Breakfast
Day 4: Prescott to Grand Canyon region
On our way to that big hole in the ground, we make a stop in Arizona's 'little Hollywood', Sedona - a spiritual mecca in the desert (and set of many a John Wayne film). Say a few 'oms' and find some zen amongst the red sandstone on the optional jeep tour before we travel towards the Grand Canyon. Meals: -Breakfast -Dinner Optional activities: -Sedona jeep tour
Day 5: Grand Canyon
Ready to "go big or go home"? You've seen pictures, but nothing can prepare you for the humility that comes with standing on the precipice of something so mighty. With a day at the Grand Canyon you can see billions of years of rock history from every angle including a 360 panorama if you take the chopper. Included today: -Grand Canyon National Park entry Meals: -Breakfast Optional activities: -Helicopter tour
Day 6: Grand Canyon to Zion National Park region, Utah
Urban hippies rejoice! A stop at the Cameron Native American Trading Post will soothe twitching shopping withdrawals with drums and silver jewellery. Continue the journey with stops at Horsesh Bend on the Colorado River and Glen Canyon Dam - one of the largest dams in the United States, and the reason for Lake Powell's existence. Meals: -Breakfast -Dinner
Day 7: Zion National Park to Las Vegas, Nevada
Zion means the kingdom of heaven - once you arrive, you'll see why. Millions-year-old sweeping sandstone canyons, iridescent waterfalls and ethereal landscapes make this a hiker and photographer's utopia. Strap on your boots and walk along the canyon floor or heed the challenge up to Angel's Landing. The views are so worth it. Then we'll make like a condor and soar across the desert to a little town called Las Vegas. Tonight: a nightclub on wheels (and pockets full of casino chips?). Included today: -Zion National Park entry -Las Vegas party bus Meals: -Breakfast Optional activities: -Nightclub crawl
Day 8: Las Vegas
Gamble your time in Vegas away on the roulette of activities available at your doorstep: bet high with indoor skydiving, put everything on black or take your winnings straight to the skies with a helicopter flight. Whichever way you choose, you're winning. Optional activities: -Helicopter flight over The Strip
Day 21: Jasper to Kamloops, British Columbia
At over 12,000 feet (almost 4000 metres) Mount Robson is the Rockies' highest peak - yep, size matters (sorry, gents). You'll have just enough time to take a selfie with a mountain goat statue and spot the moose near Moose Lake before we rendezvous with Kamloops. Meals: -Breakfast -Dinner
Day 22: Kamloops to Whistler
Summer is the new winter in Whistler, so named for the whistling hoary marmot that lives here. It's the holy grail of ski resorts, but you'll be surprised at how much more there is to do when the snow melts. Pass through the small towns and indigenous communities of British Columbia and rendezvous with the crew for a low-down of today over dinner. Included today: -Whistler village sightseeing tour Meals: -Dinner
Day 23: Whistler
Make your travel insurance work hard for you with a spot of mountain biking, ziplining, or work on your tan at the beach (seriously) with the other off-season ski bunnies. Optional activities: -Bike hire -Ziplining
Day 9: Las Vegas
G-rated Vegas sounds like an oxymoron, but there's plenty of family-friendly options from indoor skydiving to rollercoasters atop needle-point buildings. Circle the globe without leaving the strip (Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Pyramids of Giza), take a leave pass to tour Hoover Dam or Death Valley, or go white-water rafting. Today, Vegas is your oyster, and there's a good chance it will be battered and deep fried. Optional activities: -High Roller Observation Wheel -Shooting Range
Day 11: Yosemite National Park
There's not enough flowery adjectives to describe the beauty of Yosemite Valley. It dsn't have honey badgers, but it ds have bears, coyotes and golden eagles that are badass in their own right. Hike, ride or take the free shuttle to explore the real-world equivalent of Narnia. Included today: -Yosemite National Park entry Meals: -Breakfast -Dinner
Day 10: Las Vegas to Yosemite National Park region, California
Lost track of time last night? Swap stories of your Vegas antics as we drive from the desert to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, and our gateway to Yosemite National Park. Meals: -Dinner
Day 20: Jasper
Jasper's free day offerings are endless - the skytram, museums, Spirit Island boat tour, horseback riding, caning, rock climbing and fishing. Say hello to the local wildlife of wolves and coyotes and bears, oh my! Meals: -Breakfast Optional activities: -Bike hire
Day 12: Yosemite to San Francisco
The colour orange is associated with extroverts and the unconventional - so apt for San Fran. Add a bit of 'International Orange' to your life when we tick off SF's best with Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Chinatown, the Painted Ladies and a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge. Then: sail into the sunset on our optional cruise. Included today: -San Francisco sightseeing tour Meals: -Breakfast -Dinner Optional activities: -Sunset sailing cruise
Day 19: Banff to Jasper National Park
Today's theme? Ice, ice baby! First, the world's most scenic highway - the Icefields Parkway. Second, the Columbia Icefield - the largest ice cap south of the Arctic Circle. Third, a 'Sno Coach' tour of the Athabasca Glacier. Defrost in Jasper tonight. Included today: -Athabasca Glacier Sno-coach -Jasper National Park entry Meals: -Breakfast Optional activities: -Columbia Icefield helicopter tours
Day 13: San Francisco
Today, you're free to roam. Trolley rides, honking sea lions at Pier 39 and pitting yourself against the incline of Lombard Street would be our picks. NOTE: If you want a "get into jail" pass to visit Alcatraz, do the crime (of booking) BEFORE you come on tour.
Day 17: Golden to Banff National Park, Alberta
It's Louise vs Moraine in today's episode of Lake's Got Talent - you be the judge as we cross through Kicking Horse Pass and the Continental Divide into Banff, Alberta. Included today: -Lake Louise -Yoho National Park entry -Banff National Park entry Meals: -Breakfast
Day 16: Kelowna to Golden
If the von Trapps were Canadian, and travelled by bus, today would be like a scene out of The Sound of Music. Glacier National Park has the quintessential mountain peaks and lush valleys of Maria's Alps, and we haven't even reached the Rockies yet. Stop at Rogers Pass National en route to learn about Canadian history and the Park's wildlife. Dinner's with the crew tonight. Meals: -Breakfast -Dinner Included today: -Glacier National Park entry
Day 15: Vancouver to Kelowna
Kelowna is known for two things-golf and grapes. Say hello to your new Topdeck group as we take the (pretty epic) scenic drive through Fraser Valley with views of the Coast Mountains, over the Coquihalla Pass and into the Okanagan Valley. Get to know the crew over dinner tonight. Meals: -Dinner
Day 14: San Francisco to Vancouver, British Columbia
Say so long to your crew and head to the land that makes maple syrup and bacon (and bacon beer) seem completely normal, and we love them for it. Time is precious so we're flying, not driving (lucky you!). Although it is our first day in Canada, you might want to book more nights in Vancouver afterwards. We can foresee your regret from here! You're welcome. Included today: -Airport transfers & flight from San Francisco to Vancouver (1 checked bag included)
Day 24: Whistler
On the second day, Whistler created five lakes to dip your t in, a gondola lift to enjoy the view from, countless spas to relieve your stress (four-handed massage, anyone?) and enough cafes, boutiques and galleries to max your credit card. Have fun. Optional activities: -Bike hire -Ziplining
Day 18: Banff
Banff is National Geographic on steroids - all snow-capped peaks and sky-mirroring lakes. If you run out of FOMO-inducing hashtags, lower your phone and raise your pulse with optional white-water rafting on Kicking Horse River, mountain biking or horse riding, Sulphur Mountain gondola or the local cave. Warm up in the hot springs tonight. Included today: -Banff Upper Hot Springs Meals: -Breakfast Optional activities: -White water rafting -Mountain biking -Horseback riding
Day 25: Whistler to Vancouver
Passing Brandywine and Shannon Falls, we'll wrap up our trip along the scenic Sea to Sky Highway to Vancity - and throw in a drive by through Stanley Park once we arrive. Cue sad faces and goodbyes or head straight to one of the 40-plus brew houses in this craft-beer capital. There's always Facebook, and next year.
