Welcome to Thailand and bustling Bangkok! The capital of Thailand, Bangkok is one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse cities in Asia, full of mega-malls, Buddhist temples, floating markets and intense traffic.
Today we tour the city. Our first stop is the monolithic Golden Buddha, weighing more than 5.5 tonnes, then we explore the many buildings that make up the Royal Grand Palace. We'll also see Wat Pho and the Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This afternoon we enjoy a typical Thai longboat cruise through the canals before our group welcome dinner tonight. [B,D]
Enjoy the day at leisure to experience Bangkok at your own pace. This evening we'll visit the Asiatique night market and then witness the buzzing nightlife on a tour by tuk tuk. [B]
This morning we visit the floating markets at Damnn Saduak to watch the locals in traditional boats selling a variety of fruit, vegetables and souvenirs. We'll then leave the city behind and travel to Kanchanaburi, crossing the famous bridge over the River Kwai by train and visiting the Allied War Cemetery en route. [B,D]
We visit Hellfire Pass and the Australian-funded museum and memorial to our World War II diggers. We then travel north to the ruins of the former capital of Siam, Ayutthaya, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage-listed site. [B,L,D]
Special Experience: Tonight we'll dine on board a converted teak rice barge as it drifts down the Chao Phraya River and tributaries, enjoying the beautiful setting at dusk.
We travel north through the Thai countryside to Phitsanulok and visit Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat - a working Buddhist temple. This evening we'll experience the culinary theatrics of the Morning Glory show. [B,L]
Before we depart Phitsanulok, we visit Sukhothai, the first capital of Thailand. After a lovely lunch here we'll continue our journey north to Chiang Rai. [B,L]
Today we explore the 'Golden Triangle', the former centre of the world's opium trade. Our day begins with a visit to the hill tribe villages of the Akha and Yao people, where women still wear the traditional clothing and headdress. We then visit a tea plantation and try some of the local brew. [B,D]
Special Experience: This afternoon we'll enjoy a cruise along the Mekong River in a traditional boat to where the borders of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar meet.
After breakfast we take the scenic route to Chiang Mai, stopping at the craft workshops in San Kamphaeng. Here we'll be able to see silk being woven, visit a bronze workshop, and watch as beautiful hand-painted silk parasols are made. We'll visit the beautiful Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Temple, with stunning views over Chiang Mai from its location high up on the mountain. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. [B,L]
Special Experience: Visit the Elephant Nature Park and watch these rescued elephants enjoy their freedom while bathing and playing in the river. Learn about the park's objectives and how the Save the Elephant Foundation works.
