Tarkine Rainforest Walk

The Tarkine Rainforest Walk is a 4 day itinerary that allows you to explore the wonders of the southern hemisphere's largest cool temperate rainforest in comfort. We base ourselves at Tiger Ridge campsite and spend our days exploring an ancient forest landscape dominated by towering Myrtle and Sassafras. Carrying only light day packs we discover secret waterfalls, glades of giant tree ferns, enticing waterholes and spectacular lookouts. Each night we relax at our dining table, set amongst the ferns, enjoying fresh local foods and outstanding Tasmanian wine and spirits. The warmth of the camp fire and the views of the surrounding rainforest canopy from the deck are a perfect backdrop and best of all, there's no one else around.

Day 1
Today you will be collected from your central city accommodation in Launceston between 8:00 and 8:30 am, and transferred into the vast quiet of the Tarkine. From the bus it is a short climb to the rainforest clad Tiger Ridge Basecamp. Once at camp it is all about settling in, exploring and enjoying the tranquil surrounds and the company of new friends. Food, fire and wine are essential ingredients to this process. Every meal our chef serves bears testimony to the quality of Tasmanian produce. By the end of today you'll feel as if you haven't just traversed Tasmania but transcended it. Time - 40 min walk approx Distance - 1 Km Pack weight - 8 - 10 Kgs
Day 2
Today is a day of total forest immersion and relaxation. Our moderate walk involves a number of short, steep ascents and descents as we climb in and out of the valleys of beautiful forests of celery-top pine to the east of Tiger Ridge. Beyond the celery top grove lies Lonely Ridge which offers us a vast view that sweeps for miles along the forested valleys. Time - 5 hours walk approx Distance - 6 Km Pack weight - Small day pack
Day 3
Our day today features a slow easy walk down to the Huskisson River. Your guides will introduce you to the subtleties of the rainforest, its complex web of self-perpetuating life as well as sharing some interesting bush anecdotes. Along the way we will take in the incredible bird life of the area including the yellow-tailed black cockatoos, green rosellas and even the endangered white goshawk. We will also change the batteries on our motion sensitive devil-spotting cameras as part of our monitoring program with the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania. The Huskisson itself is a wild river that broadens in the valley floor and if the water level is low, meanders and warms in pools perfect for a midday swim. After lunch we too meander in this valley for a time before making our way back to Tiger Ridge to get cleaned up before dinner. Tiger Ridge's Japanese style washroom hangs out over the ferns and myrtles in the basin below - it truly is a bathroom with a view. Then, after another meal of amazing Tassie produce, we settle around the fire with a glass of wine. Time - 6 hours walk approx Distance - 7 Km Pack weight - Small day pack
Day 4
Although it is time to say a sad farewell to this ancient rainforest, we have one last stop before our journey comes to an end. The small scenic town of Waratah sits on the edge of the Tarkine wilderness. With a rich mining past along with a unique central water piece, there is much to learn and discover. This is your time to explore and enjoy what this remote, historical village has to offer. After lunch we continue our homeward journey, providing time to reminisce on your time spent in the rainforest that captivates and inspires so many! You can expect to arrive back in Launcestion at approximately 6pm. Time - 2 hours walk approx Distance - 6 Km Pack weight - Small day pack
