Day 1
You will be met at Lombok International Airport by a World Expeditions representative and transferred by private vehicle to your hotel in Tetebatu. For the rest of the day you are free to relax. Overnight at Tetebatu Mountain Resort ,Bungalow
Day 2
In the morning we leave for East Lombok port to take the ferry to Sumbawa. Along the coast you will see many mangrove trees and houses on stilts. These are the typical Buginese houses, which you find everywhere along Sumbawa's coast. Having a lunch (excluding) in Sumbawa Besar and from here we will continue by boat to Calabai, its about 3 4 hours sailing. Upon arrival in Calabai, we will drive to the village of Pancasila at a height of 570 meters. From here, the path slightly ascends to Tambora village, where an old Dutch warehouse is worth a look. The area around is still a large coffee producing area however the many tree-stumps are a reminder of the massive deforestation which took place in the 70's and 80's. Here we will spend 1 night before the trekking start. Overnight at Tambora Guesthouse
Day 3
A group of nature loving youngsters who have formed an association of porters and guides with the aim conserving this special area will organize the trek. The walk to Post 1 takes about 2 hours. The jungle becomes lush and dense with thick undergrowth, rare jungle flowers, wild berries and many brightly colored orchids. One might come across deer, monkey or even (great exception) wild boar. After 2 hours you'll reach Post 2 and the only freshwater stream found on the climb. Post 3 is at an altitude of 1800 meters. We will camp on a beautiful plain between Post 3 and 4. Overnight: Camp Total hike time: 7-8hours
Day 4
Around 04.30 a.m. we start climbing again. After post 4 (2000 meters) the trail gets steep and continues through a forest of giant reeds, climbing ferns and thickets of giant nettles. Along the track is the grave of local hero Moa Kambilo, the very first local guide. On leading a Dutch expedition to the top, he died of dysentery. After one hour you reach Post 4 with a steep climb up the slopes to the rim. After about 3 hours you reach the top with a breathtaking view of the 6 km wide and 1100 meters deep crater. If the weather is clear you can see as far as Java to the west and Flores to the east. Here we put up our camp and the rest of the day you are free to explore the area and enjoy the rugged, magnificent scenery. Overnight: Camp back at Post 3
Day 5
After a (hopefully unforgettable) sunrise we start the descent with our porters to Pancasila where we bid them goodbye. A tip for your porters would be greatly appreciated by them and we would suggest as a guideline; 150,000 IDR per day. The travel time will take about 6 hours to reach the village, from where a car will take you Kenanga Bay. A boat trip will bring you to the uninhabited island of Satonda, consisting of a volcano that rises straight from the sea. In its center a freshwater lake is home to a many birds. The underwater world of the island is magnificent and it is lovely place to relax after the taxing trek to Tambora. We will camp in tents on the beach. A perfect place for a barbecue! Overnight Beach Camping
Day 6
A short walk takes you to the lake. On the shore of the lake is a tree that has become somewhat of a legend. By hanging a stone on its branches, wishes can come true. We will spend some time here in the early morning before we sail back you to your hotel in Sumbawa Besar which will take approximately 5-6hrs. Here you will stay in a nice hotel on the beach with bungalows on stilts. There is also a swimming pool for you to enjoy after camping. Overnight at Kencana Beach Cottages, Bungalow
Day 7
An interesting day for archaeology buffs. You will visit the area near Batu Tering with 5 large megalithic sarcophagi and ancient rock carvings from around 2000 BC. The sarcophagi are a 1 hour walk from Batu Tering. The track winds through dry-land farms and rice fields until it reaches the archaeological site. On the way back we head for a wonderfully fresh stream, ideal for washing off the dust and sweat after the walk. Upstream there is a picturesque little gorge that, according to stories of the locals, is full with magical powers. Rest of the day is free for leisure. Overnight at Kencana Beach Cottages, Bungalow
Day 8
Transfer back to Lombok and spend 1 night here before you fly back home. Overnight at Qunci Villa, Garden View Travel time approximately 8hrs
Day 9
After breakfast you will be transfered to the airport where trip concludes.
