HHN001 - Norway by Design and History

If you are into setting your own pace, want to see some spectacular areas away from the tourist traps, and like good food & great hospitality, then this self-drive itinerary is for you! The Norwegian mountains and fjords are home to some of the most picturesque landscapes and this trip takes you to some prized secrets.

The accommodation we use in this itinerary are worth the trip themselves. They are a collection of houses, manors, large and small timber-built hotels and old coaching inns that have been transformed into beautiful, romantic hotels. This, and the passion shown by the hosts, is what primarily characterises this self-drive experience!

Read our favourite journalist, Barry Stone's article about staying in remote accommodation in Norway here. He travelled on an independent self-drive through Norway and Sweden with us in September, 2017.

Day 1 - Bergen - Fjærland Fjordstue Hotel

Start your trip by heading to Voss and cross Norway's longest fjord, the Sognefjord. Make sure you stop often enough to enjoy the views on the way to your destination Fjærland Fjordstue Hotel.

Day 2 - Fjærland - drive around Lusterfjord

Meander around the Lusterfjord in the inner reaches of the Sognefjord. You will drive through some of Norway's most spectacular and scenic areas, past the UNESCO's World Heritage Urnes Stave Church and through picturesque small villages.

Day 3 - Briksdals Glacier & Ålesund

Drive north via Stryn to Ålesund, famous for its Art Nouveau architecture. Starting early will allow the time for a side trip to the famous Briksdal Glacier. The city of Ålesund is known for its architecture in Art Nouveau style, its surrounding fjords and the high peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps. Stay overnight in Clarion Collection Hotel Bryggen in the heart of the town.

Day 4 - Explore Ålesund & drive to Juvet

After a morning of exploring Ålesund make the short drive to Juvet Landscape Hotel near the spectacular Gudbrandsjuvet falls. Juvet is like nothing else in Norway, as it combines the traditional old with modern architecture right in the middle of dramatic Norwegian scenery.

Day 5 - Visit the Geirangerfjord

You have a day at leisure to explore the area including the Geirangerfjord – Norway’s best known fjord.

Day 6 - Troll Road & Atlantic Road

Today your drive takes you to the dramatic hairpin bends of the Troll Road, Norwegian’s only road with a “Troll Crossing” sign. Continue via Molde and experience one of the most fascinating road stretches in Norway, as you drive along the Atlantic Road that zigzags across low bridges that jut out over the sea. The Hustadvika is an infamous stretch of ocean and when in storm it is truly dramatic. In calmer weather you might spot whales and seals.

Your destination is Håholmen Havstuer, a traditional fisherman village turned into picturesque accommodation. You actually leave your car at the pier this evening and take a small ferry across to your island accommodation. On calm summer days, you may even take a small replica Viking boat across to the island.

Day 7 - Håholmen - Deep sea fishing or ocean walks

Explore the surroundings by foot, or just spend the day relaxing. You can easily head off on a deep sea fishing trip or try your luck hand fishing at the local pier. Crab fishing is lots of fun here. Diving and hiking options are also available.

Day 8 - Trondheim – marvel at the Nidaros Cathedral

Enjoy the majestic sceneries on the way to your final destination Trondheim, the first capital of Norway founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in AD 997. A well-deserved night in the heart of the city finishes this dramatic drive.

Day 9 - Depart Trondheim

Our services finish after breakfast.
