North Korean Explorer

Our exploration of North Korea begins with a flight from Beijing to Pyongyang. We will visit the major sights such as the Tomb of King Kongmin, Central City Square and the International Friendship Exhibition which stores gifts presented to both Kim Sung II and Kim Jong II from governments and institutions around the world. You will then head out to Kaesong to straddle the North and South at the Panmunjom DMZ line before viewing The Three Charters of National Reunification Monument. Then head out to the port town of Wonsan and share a BBQ and a beer with the locals for a real glimpse into daily life in the North of Korea. This is an eye opening exploration of the most reclusive country in the world. You will be accommodated in basic, but comfortable hotels and travel in private vehicles. An expert English speaking guide will be accompanying you for the entirety of the trip until your return to Beijing.

Day 1
Upon arrival in Beijing you will make your own way to the group hotel. (or we can arrange a transfer for you at cost). The group will rendezvous at 18:30 in the hotel lobby where a group meeting will be held, followed by a dinner nearby (dinner is at your own expense). Overnight at the Dong Fang Hotel, Beijing (or similar).
Day 2
Today we will have a transfer to the Beijing Airport Terminal 2 for our Air Koryo flight at 13:00 (PEK-FNJ, every Tue, 1300h-1600h). Please note, flight times and airlines are subject to change. We arrive into the capital city, and largest city, of North Korea, Pyongyang at approximately 16:00. Dinner and overnight are at the Koryo Hotel (or similar).
Day 3
Today we will drive fromn Pyongyang to Kaesong, and stop at monument of the Three Charters of National Reunification en route. We also see the Panmunjon DMZ, Kyoro Museum, Tomb of King Kongmin. We will have a stop in Sariwon City to see the folk customs park and enjoy the view from the mountain pagoda. Overnight at Kaesong Folk Custom Hotel (or similar).
Day 4
This morning we will drive to the quiet seaside town of Wonsan City (approx. 2.5 hrs drive time). Here we will walk along the pier to Chok Islet where the locals will be fishing, drinking and enjoying a BBQ. Today we get a real glimpse into local life in North Korea. We'll have the chance to eat some locally caught seafood on the pier. Tonight we enjoy dinner at the Wonsan Seafood restaurant in the city. Later we experience Wonsan's People Park with a leisurely night time stroll. Overnight Wonsan Tongmyong Hotel (or similar).
Day 5
Today we enjoy a walk around the central square and near the port in the city, visit the former Railway Station Revolutionary site Songdowan International Children's Union Camp - a summer camp for children both in the DPRK and for international guests. We have a chance to swim at Wonsan Beach and hang out with the locals and have a picnic at Ulim Waterfall. From here we drive back to Pyongyang. (approx. 2 hrs drive time) and visit the Tomb of King Tongmyong, Pyolmuri Teahouse for Western style snacks, desserts, cocktails and drinks - great for photos of Koryo Hotel. Overnight at Koryo Hotel (or similar).
Day 6
We have a full day to explore Pyongyang, which includes the Tram, Kumsusan Palace and Revolutionary Martyr's Cemetary and Gyongjung Beer Bar. Today we will take the metro to one of Pyongyang's grand monuments, the Arch of Triumph: a triumphal arch that is 10 meters taller than Paris's. We can also visit the Korean War Museum and have the expert local guide show us around the enormous museum featuring dioramas, locally used weapons, tanks etc, and captured American equipment! We will also see the USS Pueblo - the only US Naval Ship still held captive by another nation. In the afternoon/evening we will visit the Taedonggan Diplomat's Club. Overnight at Koryo Hotel (or similar).
Day 7
Today we will have a day trip to Mt Myohyang (approx. 2.5 hours). Here we visit the International Friendship Exhibition - two large gifthouses holding the gifts presented to both Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il from people, governments and institutions all over the world. We also visit the Pohyon Temple - one of the 5 famous temples of Korea and one of the largest Buddhist temples in the DPRK. We also have a chance to explore Hyangsan town then visit Ryongmun Cavern - one of the most famous cave complexes in the DPRK for its stalactite and stalagmite formations. From here we drive back to Pyongyang. Overnight at Koryo Hotel (or similar).
Day 8
After breakfast, we make our way back to Beijing at 9:00am. We fly with Air Koryo from the Pyongyang airport and arrive at 9:55am. Please note, flight schedules and airlines are subject to change. The trip finishes on arrival at the Beijing Airport. Please note: If you wish to add time in the historic city of Beijing before/after this trip to explore Tiananmen Square, Mao's Mausoleum and the Forbidden City, please let your reservation consultant know.
