Step back in time in the colourful towns of volcanic Nicaragua

  • Discover the colonial city of Leon on a walking tour. Visit the Cathedral de la Asuncion, the largest church in Central America, and enjoy the view from the rooftop.

Day 1. Depart Australia - Arrive Managua

Bienvenido a Nicaragua! We arrive in the capital, Managua, also the cultural, commercial and political centre. Located on the shores of Lake Managua, the sprawling city is home to vibrant street art, neoclassical monuments and busy markets.

Day 2. Managua - Le n

This morning we depart for the stunning colonial city of Le n, one of Nicaragua's most culturally rich communities. The afternoon is at leisure for you to relax or begin exploring. Why not visit some of the many art galleries or several ancient churches? Tonight we'll enjoy a group welcome dinner. [B,D]

Day 3. Le n

Today we explore Le n's city centre on a walking tour, including the largest church in Central America, Catedral de la Asunci n, where we'll visit the rooftop for panoramic views over the town and nearby volcans.

Special Experience: Hear the incredible stories behind the city's many revolutionary street murals from a Sandinista guerrillero at the Museum of the Revolution.

Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. [B]

Day 4. Le n - Ometepe Island

Special Experience: Peer into the steaming crater of one of Nicaragua's most active volcans on a visit to Volc n Masaya National Park.

We'll then catch the ferry to beautiful Ometepe Island, in the middle of Lake Nicaragua, characterised by its two towering volcans, the active Concepci n and the dormant Maderas. [B]

Day 5. Ometepe Island

We'll spend the day discovering the island's best scenery, including the Devil's Viewpoint, Charco Verde Reserve, Punta Jesus Maria and Ojo de Agua, stopping for lunch at a local restaurant. [B,L]

Day 6. Ometepe Island - Granada

This morning we return to the mainland by ferry and travel to Granada, a photogenic Spanish colonial town, characterised by colourful buildings and streets. [B]

Day 7. Granada

After breakfast, we depart for the Mombacho Volcano cloud forest, a misty oasis brimming with beautiful flora and fauna. This afternoon we cruise through Granada's Isletas, a group of islands formed by an ancient volcanic explosion. Tonight we'll enjoy a group dinner to farewell Nicaragua. [B,D]

Day 8. Granada - Managua - Guatemala City

Make the most of a morning at leisure in beautiful Granada before our flight to Guatemala later this afternoon. [B]

Day 9. Guatemala City - Flores

We'll discover the city on a sightseeing tour this morning and visit the Ixchel and Popolvuh Museum, before lunch at a local restaurant. This afternoon we fly to Flores, on Lake Pet n Itz . [B,L]

Day 10. Tikal National Park Excursion

Special Experience: Visit the incredible Mayan ruins of Tikal, nestled amidst lush rainforest. The largest of Mayan cities during the Classic period 1,000 years ago, it represents one of the most impressive achievements of the Mayan civilisation. [B,L]

Day 11. Flores - Guatemala City - Panajachel

Today we fly back to Guatemala City and make our way to the scenic lakeside town of Panajachel, stopping along the way at the archaeological site of Iximch . The afternoon is at leisure. [B]

Day 12. Panajachel

This morning we board a boat on stunning Lake Atitl n. This body of water sits in a massive volcanic crater ringed by steep, verdant hills and is known for its Mayan towns and villages, and its strikingly-pointed volcans. We'll stop to visit the villages of Santiago Atitl n and San Juan la Laguna. [B]

Special Experience: Travel by tuk tuk to the home of the Mayan god, Maxim n, and witness a traditional ceremony.

Day 13. Panajachel - Chichicastenango - Antigua

Special Experience: An early start to visit the incredible, colourful market of Chichicastenango - the best in Central America. [B]

Day 14. Antigua

Known for its baroque-influenced architecture, we'll tour the sights of colonial Antigua including the Ciudad Vieja, San Antonio Aguas Calientes and the Cerro de La Cruz. [B]

Day 15. Antigua

Today is at leisure to relax or explore. As Guatemala's former capital, Antigua is filled with beautifully renovated buildings, pastel facades and bustling plazas and markets, making it a great city to explore on foot. Tonight we'll enjoy a group dinner and folkloric show to farewell Guatemala. [B,D]
