Welcome to Italy! Home of pizza, pasta, olive oil and wine, Italy is a food-lover’s paradise and a place to indulge in 'la dolce vita’ - the sweet life.
Bologna is famous for its cuisine and today we tour the city, characterised by its red-brick palazzi, towers and lengthy porticos. This evening we enjoy a group welcome dinner with our fellow travellers. [B,D]
Special Experience: We also enjoy a visit to the Gelato Museum, with tastings so you can pick your favourite!
This morning we travel to Modena. Established as a Roman garrison town in the 2nd century BC, its medieval centre is now filled with bustling piazzas, market stalls and a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral. We’ll also taste some of the balsamic vinegar for which the area is famous, and visit the Ferrari Museum in Maranello. [B]
We depart this morning for Santa Margherita Ligure, the gateway to the incredible Cinque Terre. En route, we stop in the town of Parma, the home of parmesan cheese and prosciutto, to sample some of the local delicacies. [B]
Special Experience: We spend a full day exploring some of Italy’s most photographed coastline, discovering the colourful villages that make up the Cinque Terre. Clinging to steep terraces, the villages and ancient vineyards are linked by paths, trains and boats and cannot be accessed by car, making this a truly unique area. [B]
It is easy to understand why the idyllic town of Portofino plays host to so many weddings! Originally an Italian fishing village, it is now an upmarket resort town for the rich and famous. The town is situated around a small harbour and there are plenty of cafes and boutiques to explore, along with some beautiful trails for walking in the surrounding areas. After a short orientation tour we'll have some free time to have lunch and enjoy the idyllic setting. [B]
Today we depart Santa Margherita Ligure and travel through the beautiful Tuscan countryside to Pisa, home of the famous Leaning Tower. Here we’ll also see the Baptistery and Duomo of St John. This afternoon we continue to Florence, capital of Tuscany and birthplace of the renaissance. [B]
Our city tour this morning commences at the grand Piazza del Duomo, where we see the Cathedral of Florence, Giotto’s Bell Tower, and the Baptistery - home of Ghiberti’s famed bronze 'Gate of Paradise’. No visit to Florence is complete without seeing the statue of David, and we’ll then end the morning at the Piazzale Michelangelo, offering panoramic views over Florence. Spend the afternoon at leisure. Why not shop for some of Italy’s finest leather goods? [B]
Today we depart for the 'Eternal City’ of Rome, travelling via the beautiful Umbria Valley. We'll stop for a break in Orvieto, a small town that seemingly rises out from the surrounding countryside, sitting atop a series of tuff cliffs. [B]
This morning we explore Imperial Rome. Highlights include the Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia, the Capitol and the Colosseum (fast-track entry), where gladiatorial contests and games were held along with mock sea battles and executions. This evening we enjoy a walking tour, beginning in Piazza Navona, then to the Pantheon, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, where legend has it that a coin thrown in the fountain guarantees your return to Rome! Discover majestic Vatican City this morning (fast-track entry). We’ll visit the Museum, the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica - all containing works of art and sculptures by Michelangelo. We also visit the Vatican Garden and St Peter’s Square, surrounded by a colonnade of 284 columns. The rest of the day is at leisure before a group farewell dinner this evening. [B,D]
