The adventure begins with a scenic drive along the Pan-American Highway to the town of Santa Elena, located in the Monteverde cloud forest - one of the last remaining cloud forests in the world. This peaceful town is a perfect destination to experience nature as Monteverde has six different eco-zones, with elevations from 1,300 to 1,800 meters. It enjoys temperatures that produce an enviable and incredible biodiversity with 400 species of birds, including the shining Quetzal, 2,500 species of plants, 120 species of amphibians, and 100 species of mammals. An afternoon guided hike on 1.7 miles of Treetop Walkways through primary cloud forest and 8 suspension bridges on Costa Rica’s best suspension system completes the first day’s activities.
Travelling from platform to platform through the canopy on a combination of natural trails and cables allows observation of the forest from the ground and high in the treetops. In the afternoon, take the chance to explore the cloud forest or choose from a variety of optional activities available, including: guided or solo hike through Monteverde or Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, walk around the galleries and coffee houses of Santa Elena, Don Juan Coffee Tour, ATV’s, visit to a local cheese factory.
The first part of the journey to Arenal is to Rio Chiquito from where it is a 30 minute boat ride across the picturesque Lake Arenal to the dam on the north side of the Lake. From here it is a short transfer by road to La Fortuna, the closest town to the Arenal Volcano. In the afternoon a guide will hike with you to the base of the volcano, where a naturalist guide will take you through rainforest trails for a gentle hike to spot a variety of diverse flora and fauna; such as monkeys, toucans, wild turkeys, sloths, numerous types of birds, and possibly, snakes. Arriving at the observation point in time for sunset means a fantastic view of this majestic volcano against the backdrop of the setting sun. We continue our way down to one of the nearby natural Hot Springs for a relaxing bathe. Thanks to Arenal Volcano’s geothermal activity, there is a number of natural hot springs throughout the area. They are designed to be very much in tune with their natural environment and offer a fantastic way to relax in the warm and soothing mineral waters while enjoying spectacular scenery in close proximity.
