Borneo Family Adventure

Borneo conjures up mysterious images of jungle trails, misty mountains, tribal traditions, prolific wildlife, unspoilt wilderness and hidden caverns. This adventure commences in the charming historical city of Kuching in Sarawak before exploring the spectacular Sabah to discover the beautiful natural treasures of Kinabalu National Park. This is a prelude to the trip highlight which is a visit to the famous Orangutans at the Sepilok sanctuary, and a chance of seeing an astonishing array of wildlife and birdlife that abounds in the rainforests and mangroves along the Kinabatangan River, including proboscis monkeys and macaques. Whatever your interest, this itinerary is sure to enthrall the entire family.

Day 1
Upon arrival, you will be met and transfer to the group hotel. The afternoon is at your own leisure before we meet in the evening for a group briefing and welcome dinner. Kuching is situated mainly on the southbank of the Sarawak River, and is one of Borneo's most interesting and pleasant cities. The city has many beautifully landscaped gardens and parks, historic buildings and an appealing waterfront.
Day 2
0800 hours pick up from hotel in Kuching and drive to Batang Ai reservoir. Along the way stop at Lachau Bazaar. Stroll around the shops and the small native market and have an early lunch in a local coffee shop. Then continue your journey, arriving at Batang Ai Lake around 1330-1400 hours. Board a longboat and travel upriver to Nanga Sumpa, arriving at approx. 1530 hours, although the exact time will depend on river conditions. Settle in at Borneo Adventure's lodge and have dinner. Evening free at leisure. Overnight at Nanga Sumpa
Day 3
Following breakfast hike the jungle trails along the river. Then continue upriver by longboat. Our destination is the scenic Enseluai waterfall. Along the way (if conditions are suitable) your boatman may stop to demonstrate fishing Iban-style using a jala or throw net. Visit Jambu longhouse, which is located approximately 30 minutes upriver from Nanga Sumpa Lodge. Jambu is a relatively small community with 8 families. It is the furthermost and most isolated community on the Delok River. After visiting Jambu continue your journey upriver. Arrive at the waterfall and have time to relax, swim and enjoy the rainforest surroundings. Enjoy a riverside BBQ lunch prepared by your Iban hosts. Return to the lodge. Dinner and overnight at Nanga Sumpa lodge.
Day 4
Breakfast in the lodge. Then free at leisure to relax, swim in the river or take some photos around Nanga Sumpa. At 1115 hours have an early lunch in the lodge. Depart around 1200 hours and travel downriver to the Batang Ai Lake jetty, arriving approx. 1330 hours. Then travel overland back to Kuching. Arrive in Kuching approx. 1830 hours at your hotel. Overnight: Hotel. Please Note: Weather conditions and the water level of loc al rivers may force our guides to modify the tour in the interests of safety. For example, some trekking activities are not possible during heavy rain or a thunderstorm. No refunds will be offered if a trek is cancelled or boat transfer delayed due to bad weather or river conditions.
Day 5
After breakfast you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu. Upon arrival at you will be meet and transferred to the hotel. Kota Kinabalu is a modern city that sprawls along the coast. It has a blend of cultures and you can certainly enjoy an excellent variety of cuisines! Overnight: Resort

Day 8
Early morning, pick-up for flight to Sandakan. Upon arrival, meet and transfer for a visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where captive orangutans are reintroduced into the wild. You will be able to observe them at their feeding stations in the rainforest and at the nursery (if open). Watch the feeding session at 1000 hours. Then proceed to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC). This centre rescues captured sun bears and is involved in sun bear conservation, welfare rehabilitation and education. Over 30 sun bears live at the centre in the bear house and outdoor enclosures. 11.00-1115 hours depart Sepilok and proceed to a boat jetty in Sandakan. 1145 1200 hours depart for a 1-hour boat cruise up the Lower Kinabatangan River, passing pristine mangrove forests and searching for wildlife. Arrive at Abai Jungle Lodge and have lunch. Free to relax or explore the surrounding area on the nature boardwalk. 1630 hours go on a cruise in search of proboscis monkeys, birds, reptiles and other wildlife. As night falls witness the glittering of fireflies on the mangrove trees. Return to the lodge for dinner. After dinner, go on a guided night walk around the Lodge's nature boardwalk and search for insects, birds and other wildlife. Overnight at the Abai Jungle Lodge.
Day 9
Today we have an early morning boat trip for birdwatching and wildlife viewing at Pitas Lake, before returning to our lodge for breakfast. Following breakfast we visit the nearby Abai village and observe the tree planting project before enjoying lunch with one of the local families. The rest of the day is free at your leisure. Dinner and overnight is at the Abai Jungle Lodge.
Day 10
Today after breakfast we enjoy the one hour boat journey back to Sandakan. Sandakan used to be the capital city of Sabah, and is a major commercial centre. Upon arrival we visit the biggest and busiest market in Sandakan, the Central Market, located in the heart of the city. The market has a nice seaview and is a good place to pick up any last minute souvenirs you may want. We then transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
